Speech fright

We graduate in exactly thirteen days and I have been asked to be valedictorian. I kind of assumed our class valedictorian would be Rati. I have no idea of what to say. I was counting on just sitting there in a sari. I am going to make such an idiot out of myself. What am I going to say?! I can’t make speeches!

I really envy people who can speak well in public. I’m not a disaster or anything, but somehow saying a practiced elocution piece and talking from the heart to an audience are two different things. I don’t want to sound fake, and yet, I think that if I say all of what I want to say, I’ll be there all night. I don’t want to bore people, and I wonder if my memories are really worth their time. Are my feelings really what they are going there to hear? Somehow I don’t think so. So how do I say what I want to say without sounding fake, without going on forever, without boring people, and speak on behalf of twenty other people?!

I really don’t think I am cut out for this. Anyone out there who is? Your suggestions are more than welcome!

Hey... long time since I visited this place.. heck, long time since I was on the internet..!

    Back to the point tho...
I don't see why people have such uneasy feelings while speaking... here's a really easy way to go bout doin it... first, write exactly what you want to say, not what you think they wanna hear. thank who you want, how you want. recall a memory or too... a little anecdote, nothin more... it musnt go on forever and bore people... then, when you're done writing it, ask your mum/dad to sit down on the bed, and just recite it to them. what you should do is be familiar with the speech, so your eyes aren't glued to the paper. That makes it very impersonal - something like arjuns speech last year...
what should happen is that it should be like a light, practised - but overly so - conversation with everyone... and there should be eye contact. everyone will appreciate that. what is essential is that you know your speechs outline, so you just glance down once in a whilee to make sure you're not going off track... and repeat it to your parents non-stop. thats the key.
    You'll do great... dont worry.
Oh, and one more thing - keep it short. time yourself to 5 minutes, no more. everyone likes it when tim is used crisply.

    meanwhile... how r ya...? ssup?

Rati and Aveek - that is very easy for you both to say, considering the public speaking skills the two of YOU possess!!!

Rati - Actually come to think of it, the valedictorian wasn't the HG or HB last year either na? Who was it anyway?!

Aveek - Thanks...I'll keep that in mind. Though the whole keeping-it-crisp thing didn't work...I showed Ms. Koshy and she was all "this isn't long enough! It's barely 4 minutes!!" yeesh...she wants more 'trips down memory lane' apparently!

Meanwhile, nothing is up! School is a waste of time - we are not doing anything there...! How about toi?
