Lyrics - Whatever Happened To Them??
Have you noticed that songs these days are so…wrong? It’s like all originality has died! There are either remixes…or elocution teamed with very intelligent usage of rhythm! Musicians seem to have forgotten good old melody! Anyways, it is more lyrics that bother me.
Lyrics nowadays can be nice…but for fun! None of them seem to actually make sense these days. The king of all lyrics has to be Cat Stevens! I love the song ‘Longer Boats’. Though the beauty of the lyrics in that song lies in its implications. Another song whose lyrics I really loved was ‘Boxer’ by Simon and Garfunkel. These are both old songs, but look them up sometime! The lyrics really are beautiful.
“I am just a poor boy and my story’s seldom told
I’ve squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises.
All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest.”
(Boxer, Simon and Garfunkel)
I have rarely come across lyrics that I can relate to! I did come across one today though. It is kind of depressing – before people start yelling at me for liking them – but they are SO true!!
“Such kehe raha hai deewana
Dil, dil na kisi se lagana.
Jhute hai yaar ke vade sare…
Jhute hai pyar ke kasme!
Maine har lamha, jise chaha kise pucha,
Usi ne yaaro mera dil, toda, toda
Tanha, tanha choda!”
Ok…very depressing! But it’s a nice song! (Sorry to those who didn’t understand the quote above…I’ll explain it to you if you are really interested!)
I wish that along with melody and harmony, beat and rhythm and dance music, lyrics of songs would make more sense. How long can someone listen to swearing anyway?

Hey Meghna! I do agree with you... but only up to a point! Not all songs of today are pure swearing and junk! Some rock songs still have really meaningful and pleasant lyrics coupled with melody and rhythm! I know you may not like rock music, but you should listen to their wordings... some of them really make you think!
I guess it depends on individuals and their tastes in music though, so there's not much i can say! But i agree that today's rappers and hip-hop singers don't pay much heed to their lyrics! I guess their main aim would be to make their song easy to dance to and easy to nod your head to! And if that's their sole aim then they're doing a pretty good job at it!

That isn't true. Give me an example of a modern rock song that has meaningful lyrics. And by meaningful, I don't mean self-piteous lyrisc ok? I mean something that doesn't have to do with a broken heart! Or anger! I'll be more than happy to be proven wrong...

Alanis Morissette - Jagged Little Pill
Thats the name of the album. Admitted that its a bit old (199-something...) but even though its about relationships an all, its fantastic. I rate every song there a 5, except two, which get 4. Here's the list:
1.All I Really Want
2.Hand In My Pocket
3.Right Through You
4.Forgiven
5.You Learn
6.Head Over Feet
7.Ironic
8.Not The Doctor
9.Wake Up
OK, maybe all of them aren't bout relationships - which strengthens my point (which, by the way, is opposing yours. I forgot to mention that, so... hehe...)
To sample them, go to www.singingfish.com. You get the whole song - free!! Though I don't think that you can download it... and I agreee with Su. Will get a list of 'meaningful' rock...
Cheers!!

I don't know why everyone seems to think I have something against rock music! For crying out loud Su, I have NOTHING against it!! Sheesh...
Number one...Su, I TOTALLY agree that hip hop fun music has its targe audience. I absolutely agree that every medium has its style and that's fine. (Deepthi, you listening?) All I meant to say is, that the amount of lyrics I see nowadays, seems to mean less thats all. And I think that upto a point it doesn't matter...but it's kind of sad. C'est tout!
Number two...On second thought, this post was a bit of a generalisation, so let me rephrase that. >>I haven't come accross too many lyrics that I realte to<<
Number three...I was talking about modern music. And Natasha Bedingfield is not in the least bit meaningful...!
Number four...Aveek, will check it out, hope you're right!

My Chemical Romance "If life aint just a joke then why are we laughing". "oh how wrong we were to think, that immortality meant never dying". Kids in glass houses "As you glance around the room to check that no one see's how normal you are"
Most songs nowadays are just literally meaningless words in a sentence. But many rock songs are thought about and put out there to tell a story, or say something to the listener. Such musicians as rihanna, and cristiana agrilara-just dont deserve to be called musicians.
I dont see how people can sing a song, and call it their own, when someone else has written the whole song from their personal experiences?
