Admiration Misdirected

Somehow, when Shahrukh Khan or Sachin Tendulkar is in town, the entire city knows, and is hanging around outside the stars’ hotel rooms, just waiting for a glimpse of their idol. Why is it that when Amjad Ali Khan, or Shubha Mudgal, or Bijayini Sathpathy perform in Chowdiah, not even HALF of that population knows?! Real genius is so rarely appreciated...seriously.

well said... that just shows how hysterical people are when it comes to a certain section of the society...people like bismallah khan and other greats in the field of performing arts are neglected because they dont mix art with commerce and tat is the reason why we give them the title of genius... sometimes i feel sorry for people in the corporate field too..they have all the pleasures and wealth but somehow feel they dont get adequate amount of respect... these people provide employement... help in the growth of the economy and sorry to say neither cricket nor movies( barring a few) have done our nation proud... greats like amjad ali khan have devoted their entire life and the respect they deserve is not propotionate to what they deserve... the prime reason is the media which i guess is the biggest supporter of nepotism... secondly people are illiterate and uneducated and people relate to cricket and movie stars when compared to corporate big wigs or artisits for that matter... the saddest part educated youth, have kno idae about them..tats the sorry state...but at the end of the day it is survival of the fittest!

Meghna, most of my friends and cousins in Bangalore have never heard of Nrityagram. Some of them can't type the whole name out properly. THAT was what shocked me.
Its not that dancers and musicians hide from the world. They are very accessible, but sadly, my friends would choose Sachin Tendulkar over Bijayini Satpathy or Surupa Sen.

Today, I watched Guru Durga Charan Ranbir perform. For free. A few days back, Guru Gangadhar Pradhan performed here. Uma Dogra, a week back, Kanak Rele on Friday, Birju Maharaj on the 31st of December. All for free. How many Mumbaikars know abt this. Well, if Shah Rukh Khan even came to empty his dustbin at the same venue, we would have had mobs.
